From January to June 2023, I worked as a mechanical engineering co-op at Jetcool Technologies. Jetcool is a startup (~25 employees while I was there) that develops liquid cooling solutions for high performance computing. The culture there was great for introducing me to what working in industry looks like. I gained exposure to testing, design, manufacturing, quality, and even product delivery!
This final presentation that I gave at Jetcool summarizes some of the major work that I accomplished there. The Quality and Manufacturing slide and Product Delivery slide have been taken out due to sensitive content on the slides, but I can elaborate on them below.
I designed this mount to be able to snap onto a radiator, and hold fans that are able to increase airflow through the radiator to increase cooling capabilities of the radiator.
I designed this piece in CAD, and programmed the CAM for it, along with running the machining of it from a stock piece of ABS plastic using a CNC machine. The purpose of this piece was for a DOE that I designed to investigate the optimal drive torque required for M3 flathead self-tapping screws in ABS plastic. The variables are pilot hole diameter and depth, and multiple pieces could be made for different drive torques. Additionally, a coupon was made with a countersink, and a flange for the tension test machine to be able to clamp onto.
For Quality, I gained experience inspecting the quality of the micro-holes that were being produced. Using a Zeiss to inspect the holes, I was able to measure the hole size, and inspect the overall accuracy of them.
Towards the end of my time at Jetcool, I was able fly out to a customer that we were delivering a prototype to and assist with the install of their system. This is a prototype that I had been contributing a lot towards, so it felt very meaningful that I was trusted enough with this task. Additionally, this was even more high stakes due to the fact that the performance of this prototype would inform the customer whether or not they would be completing a larger order of this product, so it had to be installed correctly.
